Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he might boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
