Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved playing different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently challenge each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision.
